I have proposed to Google, in their contest, the construction of an aqueduct system that would take water from the flood prone areas of the mid-west and direct that water to the west and southwest. While the flood waters are on their way to the western States, we could install turbine generators into the aqueduct system in such a way that the generation of power would be a by-product. We could connect these generators into the national power grid give us a cheap source of electricity. This project would create jobs for people wherever it is initiated.
Another helpful by-product of the removal of the excess water from the mid-West would be the reduction of property loss, the reduction of pollutants into the coastal waterways, and the prevention of the lost of topsoil in the farmlands of the Midwest. This would enable an increase in farm produce as well. This formula for capturing flood waters and re-directing it to areas that are arid could be a boon to third world countries as well – such as water to the Sudan with cheap electricity as well.
Another benefit would be the growth of trees and plants in areas where they never were before, creating a forest where there was none before. This project would also lend itself to the dramatic reduction in pollutants in the atmosphere world-wide.
I submitted this proposal to ‘Goggle’ at 4 am this morning – 25 September, 2008 for a chance to be one of five people that will win part of ten million dollars for the best project that could change the way the world lives.
